Jim was not only a member, he was a friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Jim was dedicated individual to whomever or whatever he did. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, as well as a vibrant grandfather. Jim gave it all to be the best he could. He will be missed but his memory will live on. He made an influence on everyone he came in contact with.

Jim was a person that had a special knack of turning a bad day in to a good day for any one that crossed his path. He was always upbeat and would "give you the shirt off his back" if you asked him for it. I will miss walking into Station #1, looking through the glass and not seeing him, or not hearing some of the razzing he would always give me and the other firefighters. Jim has served the community for many years and we truly appreciate and thank you for that. He will be greatly missed, our prayers and thoughts are with his family.

The man made me think of my grandfather, not in his looks, not his personality, and not the way he treated people. My grandfather always said, "People only pick on you if they like you." Jim must have loved and been loved by everybody. He was always taking it from somebody, or he was giving it right back. When Jim was around there was almost always a playful breeze in the air, until it was time to dispatch a call! At that moment he turned into one of the most serious and dedicated persons I have ever known. Jim's dedication and love for our department and personnel was second only to the dedication and love that he expressed for his wife and family. My deepest condolences and sympathy go out to the Sutherland family and his Harlem-Roscoe family. He will be missed.

James Edward Sutherland

It is with great sadness that the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Protection District announces the passing of one of our dispatchers, James Sutherland. Jim passed suddenly on October 2, 2008. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to all his family and friends.

 

In Memory . . .

Jim was an avid member of the fire service and served time previously with the North Park Fire Department, with Lifeline Ambulance as an EMT-P, and recently as a dispatcher with Harlem-Roscoe. He was a very up-beat individual and was always "chipper". Jim will be greatly missed.

Jim always had a smile and boy he loved to tease. He loved the fire department and was so proud to be part of the Harlem-Roscoe family. We will miss him greatly! My heart goes out to his family.

We're gonna miss Jim. He was a great guy, always quick with a joke and one of those guys who could just brighten up your day. I'll miss his playful banter and cameraderie. He was truly dedicated to the citizens of the district and served them with honor and distinction. My heart goes out to his family for this tragic loss.

I sure hope they have Mountain Dew and an ice machine in heaven! We were always razzing each other about something, such as his love of Mountain Dew or motorcycles. My deepest condolences to his family.

No one can understand the quick and tragic loss of a loved one. This pain stays with you for a long time. All you can do is hope for the family to be together, and share the great memories of the loved one every time they are together. All you can hope is that their memory stays true to everyone. Jim touched many lives while he was with us and his memories will stay with us for a long time to come.

Jim was so computer savvy - always willing to help us computer illiterate folk who had no clue. He recently designed a safety certificate for me and the Pub Ed Division that will be used for years to come. Every time I use it, I will think of him and the laughter he brought to my day. He will be missed!

Jim tried not to take things in life too seriously. The firefighters would come in and be complaining about something and Jim's famous line was, "You love it, and you know it!" I will miss finding sunflower seeds in the dispatch room; he was always eating those things.

This town won't be the same without Jim. I couldn't go anywhere without running into him. Whether it be at the fire department, the store, or a fair; he was always around with a smile and friendly hello. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We will miss him!

Jim is one of those people that made the world a better place. He truly enjoyed being around people in any setting and always made people smile and laugh. He rarely had a negative thing to say, and if he did, he made it funny. His nature was to "answer the call." As an emergency responder or dispatcher, or--more importantly--as a father, husband, brother and friend. If you needed ANYTHING, and he could help, he would. Our Fire Department family will certainly miss him and I pray for his family to draw on Jim's strength and love-of-life as they endure this tragic loss. We are all only here for a short time, Jim made a difference while he was here and his spirit lives on in everyone he touched.
